Cuppa!
"Coffee cup and cutlery"
oil on panel, 8 x 8 inch.
There's artists I admire and at times something of their work comes through when I'm not thinking too much about them. Richard Diebenkorn is one of these and I think there's a little something of his work creeping into this small oil painting.
I'm not just thinking about values, shapes and edges in this one. Also the passages of paint as abstract shapes with their own surfaces and concerns. The shadow and light shapes inside the cup and the shadow shape to the right of the cup are good examples of what I mean by this.
If there was one thing I'd do differently, it would be to lift the value of the foreground (table top) slightly and softly grade this as the shape recedes.
The little coffee cup we inherited from my parents neighbours. It's a beautiful set of japanese coffee cups. Delicate and they sit nicely in your hands. It's a special experience to have a good coffee in these while sitting in the sun on a cool morning.
