Mrs Minters Orange Mug

"Orange coffee cup and cutlery"

oil on panel, 10 x 10 inch.

This is a reworking of a subject I tackled a couple of year's ago.  This one is slightly larger and a little more considered and I like the result.

It's interesting the differences that just happen when reworking a subject.  The viewer is lower and we see more of the side of the mug, so the lip of the mug breaks up the edge of the table.  The edge of the table is at an angle where previously it was horizontal.  The shadows of the cutlery handles on the wall made it into this one they didn't in the first version. The edge of the tablecloth made it into this version too though a lot of the fabric folds included at the half way point I scraped out and simplified.  I spent a lot more time thinking about colour with this one too working loosely (very loosely) with a double split complementary palette.  Yellow-green, turquoise, cerulean blue, magenta, and orange.  To this end there hints of pinks, yellows, and blue greys, and purples in the highlights.

It's a bit too soon to think through what I'd do differently, but I can say what I'd do if I tackled the subject again.  I'd set a challenge to work it impasto, slather the paint on.  I think it would suit the subject.

From the previous post titled "Cuppa!": The little coffee cup we inherited from my parents neighbours.  It's a beautiful set of Japanese coffee cups.  Delicate and they sit nicely in your hands.  It's a special experience to have a good coffee in these while sitting in the sun on a cool morning.
